The Masks We Wear

Mask

We often go through life wearing a mask that we hide behind. A mask that hides our flaws, failures, insecurities. We compare ourselves to other people. We measure our success by keeping up and competing with the Joneses. We put other people down to boost our fragile egos. But who are we really fooling?

Many people find themselves unhappy and alone. Living stress-filled mediocre lives just to pay rent. Or collecting materialistic things such as expensive shoes, cars, awards, trophy spouses. But do they really fill the void?

I’ve learned that happiness is not a destination. It is really connected to my thoughts. A wise man once said, If you don’t like how you feel, then change your thoughts. Thomas D. Willhite was right.

The next time you feel sad, mad or angry, try checking in with your thoughts. Become mindful of what you are thinking about. Awareness is key, and the first step to transforming your life. Still don’t believe me? Then think about ice cream and puppies. Are you still mad? Or do you have a smile on your face?
